Additional Training Help
If you have tried all of the guidelines I have listed in my post Shih Tzu Peeing In House – Why And What To Do and your shih tzu continues with his indoor indescretions, there is a free email training course available from my partners at TrainPetDog. This particular course is specifically designed with the shih tzu breed in mind.
In addition to the free shih tzu training email course, TrainPetDog run a free, non-breed specific adult dog and puppy potty training email course that you may find useful.
Best Pet Playpen
This Frisco Dog Exercise Pen is ideal for shih tzu potty training.
The sturdy steel construction is covered in a black coating so that there are no nasty little sharp edges for your dog to scratch himself on.
It has a walk-through door that offers the security of a double locking system to prevent your shih tzu from learning how to open it.
If you are tight for space, there are different assembly configurations to suit your needs, though the square option is best for the potty training set-up. You can always alter it to another shape once the training has been successfully completed.
The playpen folds down flat for transportation, meaning that you can take it on your travels so that your shih tzu will have a familiar home away from home. You can even use it outdoors using the ground anchors provided.
I recommend the 36 x 24 x 36 inch (91 x 60 x 91 cm) size. Anything less will be too small to fit in the bed, toys, feeding bowls and litter tray. Anything larger and your shih tzu will have too many options on where to pee.

This Comfortable Bed Fits In Well
Prevention is better than the cure. Shih tzu, with their long bodies and short legs, are prone to arthritis at the rear end around their backbone, hips and legs joints.
Treating a shih tzu to an orthopedic bed before arthritis develops can help slow down its progress in later life and perhaps avert it altogether.
The Frisco Orthopedic Bolster Bed features plenty of support for your shih tzu with its 4-inches (10 cm} thick foam of which the top inch (2.5 cm) is memory foam to mould itself around his body.
There is also a bolster running almost all the way around the bed providing neck support and exlusion from draughts. The front of the bolster is cut away to provide step-in access without your shih tzu having to climb over.
The medium size at 25 x 21 x 7 inches (64 x 53 x 18 cm) is a perfect size for the average shih tzu and also to fit neatly into one corner of the pen, helped by its rectangular rather than round shape.
Last but not least, this bed has a textured fabric cover that can be removed and machine washed.
Top Choices For Food And Water Bowls
The Food Bowl That Ticks All The Boxes
I particularly like this QT Brake-Fast Dog Bowl because it has all of the desired features for a feeding bowl that is going to be used in the confines of a pen.
First of all, the main body is constructed of food-grade stainless steel. Stainless steel has superior hygiene qualities over plastic bowls that over time develop bacteria-harboring scratches and ceramic bowls that are susceptible to cracks that can not only harbor bacteria, but can also produce dangerous sharp edges if the cracks go on to become breaks.
For a complete clean, the bowl can be disassembled. The three stainles steel posts in the center are unscrewed and washed by hand with hot water and washing-up liquid. The rubber base is taken off and hand washed using cold or tepid water as hot water can damage the rubber. The actual bowl can either be hand washed with the posts, or placed on the bottom rack of the dishwasher.
The three posts in the center of the bowl prevent your shih tzu from bolting-down all of the contents of the bowl in one go, forcing him to eat in a more controlled manner. This not only stops him becoming bloated by over-filling his stomach, but also makes his food last longer into the day, which is a good thing if you are going to be out of the house for a few hours.
The bowl can be filled with any type of dog food, kibble, wet food, or homemade.
QT claims the rubber base to be a “no-slip-grip”, a feature that will help keep the bowl in the designated corner of the pen and not pushed into the toilet area.
There is a choice of three sizes. The smallest, the 2-cup bowl, ought to be adequate for most shih tzus.
Ensuring An Adequate Water Supply
To ensure that your shih tzu has an adequate supply of water inside the pen while you are out, I recommend the type of bowl with an attached reservoir to keep it topped up.
I particularly like this version by Petsafe because it comes with several dog and owner friendly features.
First and foremost, it is fitted with a food-grade stainless steel bowl that is removable for cleaning purposes.
The reservoir is made from sturdy, BPA-free plastic. When in use, it locks into place to form a strong unit that is difficult to knock over, ensuring water spills are kept to a minimum. The reservoir can be used with or without a Healthy Pet Water Filter, an optional extra.
The unit doesn’t take up much floor space and will easily fit alongside the QT Brake-Fast food bowl in the allotted area of the pen.
The 64-oz (1.9 litre) version should be large enough for most circumstances, but if you a regularly going to be leaving your shih tzu alone for many hours, especially in hot climates, it might be worth considering the 128-oz (3.8 litre) model.

Toys To Keep Your Shih Tzu Amused And Anxiety-Free
To help eliminate boredom and possible separation anxiety, it’s important that your shih tzu has a selection of toys in the pen to play with,
Here are two that should also stimulate the brain:This entry level dog puzzle toy is the number one best selling dog toy on Amazon at the time of writing
Your shih tzu will have to use all of his craft and guile to learn how to uncover the treats that you hide under the bones. You can even alter the degree of difficulty if he works it out too quickly!
Although it’s the best selling dog toy on Amazon, again at the time of writing, Chewy have it on offer at a lower price.
Another fine toy that will occupy the mind of your shih tzu as he tries to extricate the treats from inside the ball. It has four difficulty settings. So as your shih tzu masters one level, you can keep him engaged by moving him up to the next level.
The toy is available in two sizes, 3-inch (7.6 cm) diameter, and 4-inch (10.2 cm). I recommend the smaller size for a shih tzu.
Your shih tzu is going to need at least one comfort toy in his pen. There are countless, good quality plush toys with squeakers on the market and your shih tzu could be happy with any of those.
However, if you want to give them a little extra feeling of comfort and security, a plush toy with simulated body heat and a simulated heartbeat, such as the example below, is the way to go.
A Dog Litter Tray For Potty Corner
This easy-to-clean, durable plastic litter tray has a cutaway front edge to allow your shih tzu to step in rather than climb in.
It comes in two sizes. Despite what it says about the weight of the dog in the description, the large size would take up too much room in the pen, so I recommend opting for the small size.
Rather than filling the litter tray with sand or absorbent granules, both of which can prove to be extremely messy, I recommend the use of puppy training pads as a liner for the tray.
These Hartz Home Protection Odor Eliminating Dog Pee Pads at 21-inches (53 cm) square are a good size for the Puppy Dog Litter Pan.
When your shih tzu pees on these pads, the urine is immediately transformed into a gel which prevents leakage. A lavender scent helps reduce or eliminate odors.
If you would prefer to think green and have reusable pee pads instead of the disposable type, take a look at Pet Parents Pawfect Washable Dog Pee Pads.
Have you noticed wet paw prints leading away from “the scene of the crime” when your shih tzu has peed in the house? These pee pads prevent this as the liquid is immediately absorbed inside the pad, leaving the surface dry.
The pads also feature what the manufacturers call StickyPaw backing, to hold them in place, They can be washed on warm heat with your usual laundry detergent.
If you are going to use these pads in the Puppy Dog Litter Pan, opt for the 18-inch x 24-inch (46 cm x 61 cm) size.
Don’t Forget The Enzyme Cleaner!
Probably your most important ally in the war against indoor pooch peeing is a good quality enzyme eradicator to take away all of the signpost smells that tells a dog that this is a good spot to pee on.
The Shop Care Super Enzyme Pet Urine & Odor Destroyer can be used on most surfaces, indoors or out. Plus, it is biodegradable for the environment and non-toxic for humans, pets and other animals.
It is available as a handy spray for a quick fix and also in larger containers to mix with cold water in the mop bucket for a deeper clean.
